The DeKalb Middle School Lady Saints basketball team sprung into action last week, opening its season with a road win, before coming home to face a tough Smith County team.

On Tuesday, October 10, the ladies traveled to the far away land of Van Buren County, where they took on the Lady Eagles. DMS would jump out with a big lead to start the game, but the Eagles would claw their way back.

The Lady Saints scored 10 points in the first period, with Jordyn Agee sinking a pair of three-point baskets, while Sophie Adcock and Hailey Moore each had a two-pointer. Van Buren was held to just a single free-throw point.

Brileigh Bullard would have the only points for DMS in the second period, with a two-point shot. The Lady Eagles would come away with a pair of two-pointers, but DeKalb held on to a 12-5 lead at the half.

Jerusalem Aldino and Moore each hit a three-point basket for the Lady Saints in the third period, while Adcock sank a two-point shot. Agee also added a pair of free throws. The Lady Eagles were held to eight points, giving DMS a 22-13 lead.

Hannah Tolbitt hit a two-point basket in the fourth, as did Agee. Bullard added a free throw, while Van Buren was held to seven points. The Lady Saints held on to claim the 27-20 road win. Agee was the top scorer for DMS with 10 points, while Moore had five. Adcock had four points, Bullard and Aldino each had three, and Tolbitt had two.

The following Thursday, the ladies were on their own court, facing the Smith County Lady Owls. It would be a close game with the lead going back and forth throughout.

Both teams came away with 10 points in the first period. For DeKalb, Aldino hit a free throw and a two-pointer, while Agee, Lola Colwell, and Aubree Fuson each sank a two-pointy shot. Adcock added a free throw.

The score remained close through the second period, with DMS coming away with eight points. Agee hit a three-pointer, a two-pointer, and a free throw, while Aldino had a two-point basket. Smith County was held to seven points, giving the Lady Saints the narrow 17-18 halftime lead.

The third period would go to the Lady Owls, with Smith putting six more points on the board. DMS had four points, off of two-pointers by Adcock and Agee. Smith was up, 23-22.

The lead would change several times through the fourth period. Agee would come away with a pair of two-point shots, and two free throws, while Bullard also had a free throw point. Smith fought hard, but DMS would hold them to just four points, giving the Lady Saints the 29-27 victory.
