Lady Saints battle Upperman
Softball

The DeKalb Middle School Lady Saints softball team managed to get one game on the books last week, rescheduling a planned Tuesday game for Wednesday, when they hosted Upperman. The girls would take the early lead and hang on for the win.

After Upperman went three up three down at the top of the first, the Lady Saints came to the plate looking for points. Carleigh Tramel got a walk to start things off, then Zoie Ashburn reached on a grounder and error at shortstop. Kennedy Odom and Paizlee Taylor would go down swinging, but then Aubree Fuson stepped to the plate. Fuson singled on a hard grounder to center as Tramel scored, then Ashburn would score on a passed ball as Hailey Moore was up to bat. Moore walked, then Fuson scored on a passed ball as Hannah Tobitt was at the plate. The Lady Saints were up, 3-0.

Upperman wouldn’t get moving until the top of the third, when a double line drive to left scored one run, then another runner came home on a wild pitch. DeKalb would get off the field but Upperman had cut the lead 3-2.

The Lady Bees would tie the game at the top of the fourth off of an error, but the Lady Saints were not done.

At the bottom of the fourth Tramel singled on a fly to second, then Ashburn reached on an error by short. Kennedy Odom loaded the bases with a walk, then Paizlee Taylor came to bat. Tramel would touch the plate after a wild pitch, then Taylor hit a double on a line drive to centerfield as Odom scored. DMS was up 6-3.

Upperman had one last chance, and would score one more run at the top of the fifth, but that was all they would get. The Lady Saints came off the field with the 6-4 victory.

Odom earned the win from the circle, surrendering eight hits and four runs over five innings, striking out two and walking two.
