The DeKalb Middle School Lady Saints came away with a win against Smith County a couple of weeks ago, but then fell in a pair of games against Upperman.

On Monday, March 20, the team traveled to Smith County where they came away with a big victory. Smith County would get on the board first, scoring three runs at the bottom of the first inning.

The Lady Saints came away with one run at the top of the second after Sophie Adcock singled on a bunt and an error by first. Jerusalem Aldino would also reach on a bunt and an error as Adcock made her way home. Aldino would steal third but would be left standing. DMS was on the board 3-1.

Smith would add one more run in the second after a pair of triples, but DeKalb would take the lead and pull away at their next at bat. Lakelyn Nelson took a base with a HBP, then Allie Estes singled on a line drive to center. Hannah Brown hit a single on a line drive to left, and later Adcock singled on a bunt. Aldino took a base with a HBP then Lilliana Judkins got a walk. Maggie Hendrixson would then hit a double on a line drive to center. Smith would get off the field, but not before DeKalb claimed a 6-4 lead.

Smith County was not about to lay down but would only manage one runner on base in the third. She would be left standing.

DMS would seal the game at the top of the fourth, with Brown, Young, and Brooklyn Fuson each reaching on bunts. Aldino would later come to bat and hit a double to center. The Lady Saints would score five runs to go up 11-4.

Smith would manage two more runs at the bottom of the fourth, but it was too little too late. The Lady Saints took the 11-6 victory.

It would be a different story the following day as DeKalb hosted visiting Upperman. It would be a late game drive by Upperman that would decide the game.

Upperman would strike first, scoring one run at the top of the second, but the Lady Saints would get rolling in the bottom of the third, tying the game. Liliana Judkins reached on a single to short, then Maggie Hendrixson doubled on a line drive to center. Next, Lakelyn Nelson would get a double of her own on a line drive to center, sending Judkins home.

Upperman would reclaim the lead at the top of the fourth with one more run, then DeKalb grabbed the lead back as they came to bat. Brown hit a double on a line drive to center followed by a single by Lillie Young. Both would touch home plate putting DMS up, 3-2.

It was at the top of the fifth that the bottom dropped out for the Lady Saints. Upperman’s bats came to life and they added seven runs to the board. By the time DMS got off the field, Upperman held a 9-3 lead.

As the Lady Saints came to bat one last time, Nelson took a walk, and later Brown hit a triple on a line drive to center. Brown would score herself after a single on a line drive to center by Young. That would be all the points DMS would see. Upperman held on for the 9-5 win.

It would be much the same the following Thursday, as DMS traveled to Upperman for a rematch. The game wouldn’t see points until the top of the third when the Lady Saints put up three runs. Hannah Brown hit a double on a line drive to left field, followed by a single by Lillie Young. Brooklyn Fuson then hit a triple on a line drive to left field, sending Brown and Young home. Fuson would come home herself after a single to left by Sophie Adcock. The Lady Saints were up 3-0.

Not to be outdone, Upperman came away with three runs of their own as they came to bat, tying the game.

Maggie Hendrixson and Lakelyn Nelson would each touch home plate for the Lady Saints in the fourth but that would all they would reach. Upperman came away with four runs as they came to bat, taking the 7-5 lead.

Adcock would reach with a walk then make her way to third, but would be left standing on base. Upperman took the 7-5 win.
