The DeKalb County High School basketball teams played a couple of regular season games last week before moving on to some holiday tournament play.
On Tuesday, December 17, the teams traveled to Watertown where they took on the Lady Purple Tigers and Purple Tigers. In the girls’ game, the Lady Tigers would let the game get away in the second period.
The Lady Tigers scored 11 points in the first period, with Allie Melton sinking a pair of three-point baskets, Avery Agee with one, and Brooke Fuson getting a couple of free throws. Watertown stayed close with 10 points.
Watertown would pull away in the second period with 17 points, while DeKalb was held to just four. Autumn Crook sank a two-pointer, while Millie Barton added a couple of free throws to DeKalb’s score. Watertown was up 31-15 at halftime.
Chloe VanVranken got on the board for the Lady Tigers in the third period, sinking a two, and three free throws. Barton had a pair of two-point baskets, while Agee had one. Watertown was held to eight, but still commanded a 39-26 lead.
VanVranken repeated in the fourth with another two and three free throws, while Avery Agee sank a three-pointer, and sister Jordyn Agee had a two-pointer. Melton added a couple of free throw points. Watertown scored another eight, claiming the 47-38 win.
The Tigers would have a better night, taking the lead early and never looking back. DeKalb scored 11 points in the first period, with Logan Duke sinking three two-point shots, while Dallas Kirby had a pair of twos and a free throw. Watertown was held to just two points.
Jon Hendrix got in on the action in the second period, hitting a three-point shot for the Tigers, while Jordan Parker got on the board with a three-pointer himself. Kirby added another two-point basket. Watertown was held to seven, giving DeKalb the 19-9 lead at the half.
Kirby sank three two-point baskets for the Tigers in the third, while Parker had a pair of two-pointers and a free throw. Watertown was held to four. DeKalb was up 30-13.
It seemed that everyone got in on the scoring for DeKalb in the fourth period. Hendrix had a three-pointer, while Kirby and Kiece Hannah each had a pair of two-pointers. Seth Fuson, Parker, Chase Young, and Ben Driver each had a two-pointer. Watertown only scored seven, giving the Tigers the 49-20 victory.
On Thursday, the teams were back on the court, this time participating in the Frank’s Shootout Tournament in White County.
The Lady Tigers faced off against York in their first game, but would fall way behind before halftime. DeKalb scored nine points in the first period, with Avery Agee hitting a three and a free throw, while Melton hit a three-point shot, and Barton a two-pointer. York opened up with 16.
Melton scored the only points for the Lady Tigers in the second period, a two and three-point basket. York rolled away with 21 points and the 37-14 lead.
Avery Agee hit another three-point shot in the third, while VanVranken added a two-pointer and a free throw and Melton a pair of free throws. York added 14 and were up 51-22.
The Lady Tigers ended the game with nine more points. Autumn Crook and Melton each had a two-pointer, while Avery Agee had a three-pointer. Jordyn Agee added two free throw points. York was held to seven, but claimed the 58-31 win.
The Tigers would take on Cookeville, and slowly fall behind in the first half. The Tigers scored six in the first period, with Parker sinking a pair of two-pointers, while Kirby had one. Cookeville scored nine.
DeKalb put nine more on the board in the second period, with Parker hitting another couple of twos, while Hendrix had a three-pointer and a free throw. Elliott Barnes added a free throw point. Cookeville came away with 14, taking the 23-15 lead at the half.
The Tigers came out strong in the third, scoring 15 points. Parker had three two-point shots, Kirby had two and a free throw, and Chase Young added a two-point basket. Barnes had a pair of free throw points. Cookeville continued to pull away with 19 points.
Parker continued his good night in the fourth period with a three-pointer, a couple of twos, and a pair of free throws. Kirby and Porter Hancock each had a two-point basket. Unfortunately, Cookeville scored 14 and took the 56-43 win.
On Friday, the Lady Tigers were back in action, this time taking on Hutchinson. This would be a close game, but DeKalb would let it get away in the third.
The Lady Tigers scored 12 in the first period, with two threes by Avery Agee, and one each by VanVranken and Melton. Hutchinson would get 13 points.
DeKalb added 13 to the board in the second, with three-pointers by VanVranken, Jordyn Agee, and Avery Agee, while Fuson added a couple of two-point baskets. Hutchinson was held to three, putting the Lady Tigers up, 25-16.
VanVranken and Barton each had a pair of two-pointers in the third, while Melton added one. Hutchinson came to life with 27 points, taking the 43-35 lead.
The Lady Tigers ended the fourth with 20 points. VanVranken hit three twos, a three-pointer, and a free throw, while Melton and Avery Agee each had a three-point shot. Jordyn Agee and Barton each had a two-pointer. Hutchinson ended with 16, taking the 59-55 win.
The Tigers took on York where the game would be close in the first half, but DeKalb would pull away in the second.
The Tigers scored 15 in the first period, with Hendrix sinking a couple of three-pointers, Parker a pair of two-pointers, and Duke and Kirby each with a two-point basket. Fuson added a free throw. York scored 13.
Barnes hit a couple of three-point shots and a two-pointer for the Tigers in the second, while Kirby had three twos and a free throw. Parker had a three-point basket and a free throw. Once again, York scored 13, giving DeKalb the 34-26 halftime lead.
The Tigers put 14 on the board in the third, with Parker and Hendrix each sinking a three-pointer, while Kirby had three two-pointers. Duke had one two-point shot. York was held to six, giving DeKalb the 48-32 lead.
DeKalb ended the game with 13 points. Barnes hit a two and a three, while Driver added a three-pointer. Parker had a two-point shot and a free throw, while Kirby had a two-pointer. York was held to six, giving the Tigers the 61-38 victory.
