After falling in a tight home game last week against Warren County, the DeKalb County High School Lady Tigers basketball team went on to dominate in two games on the road. Along the way, high school junior, Kadee Ferrell, joined the elite 1,000 point club.
On Tuesday, January 5, the Lady Tigers were in front of the hometown crowd as they faced off against border rival Warren County. The game would stay close, but the Lady Pioneers would come out on top.
DeKalb scored seven points in the first quarter, with Ella VanVraken getting a three and two-point basket, while Ferrell had a two-pointer. Warren took the early lead, scoring 12 points.
The Lady Tigers scored six points in the second quarter, with VanVraken coming away with a three-point shot, while Madison Martin had a two-pointer. Cadee Griffith added a free throw point. The Lady Pioneers continued to pull away with 11 points, taking a 23-13 halftime lead.
VanVraken had three two-point baskets for the Lady Tigers in the third quarter, as well as a free throw. Megan Cantrell had a three-pointer and a free throw, while Ferrell added a pair of two-point shots. DeKalb's 15 points cut into Warren's lead, but they were able to get 11 points. The Lady Pioneers were up, 36-28.
DeKalb came away with 12 points in the fourth quarter, with Ferrell getting a couple of two-point shots and five free throws, while VanVraken had a three-point basket. Warren was able to stay in front, scoring 14, and taking the 50-40 victory.
On Friday, January 8, the Lady Tigers were on the road, this time facing the Lionettes of Cannon County. With Kadee Ferrell needing only 14 points to reach membership in the elusive 1,000 Point Club, she caught fire, coming away with 27 points in the game.
DeKalb jumped out on top in the first quarter, scoring 18 points. Ferrell had five two-point baskets, while VanVraken had two, and Griffith had one and two free throws. Cannon County was held to 10 points.
Cantrell had a three-point basket for the Lady Tigers in the second quarter, while Ferrell and VanVraken each had a two-point shot. The Lionettes were held to only three points, giving DeKalb the 25-13 halftime lead.
Ferrell broke the 1,000 point mark in the third quarter, with three two-pointers and a three-point shot. Cantrell had a three-pointer, while Martin added a two-point basket. Cannon County had 13 points, giving DeKalb the 39-26 lead.
The Lady Tigers scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, with Ferrell getting a two-pointer and four free throw points, while Cantrell had yet another three-point shot. VanVraken had a couple of two-pointers and a free throw, while Hannah Willingham had a free throw point. The Lionettes were held to 17 points, giving the Lady Tigers the 54-43 win.
The following day, the Lady Tigers were again on the road, this time to the far away land of Sequatchie County. There, DeKalb would once again put up some big points.
Cantrell sank a pair of three-point baskets in the first quarter, while Griffith had a couple of two-point shots. VanVraken and Ferrell each had a two-pointer of their own. Sequatchie was held to seven points, giving DeKalb the early lead.
The Lady Tigers were even hotter in the second quarter, adding 18 points to the scoreboard. Ferrell had three two-point baskets and a pair of free throw points, while VanVraken had a three and two-pointer. Martin had a three-pointer, while Summer Crook had a two-pointer. Sequatchie had 14 points, giving DeKalb a 32-21 halftime lead.
DeKalb padded their lead in the third quarter, taking 20 points. Ferrell had a couple of two-point shots and a pair of free throws, while VanVraken and Martin each had a two-pointer and a couple of free throw points. Cantrell and Natalie Snipes each added a three-point basket. Sequatchie was held to nine points. DeKalb was up, 52-30.
Crook had a pair of two-pointers and a free throw in the fourth quarter, while Cantrell had a three-pointer and a couple of free throw points. VanVraken and Tess Barton each had a two-point basket. Once again, Sequatchie was held to nine points, securing the 66-39 victory.
The Lady Tigers are 5-6 (1-3) on the season.
