The DCHS Lady Tigers basketball team was in action last week, traveling to Watertown to take part in the Aflac Christmas Classic. The team would fall in one game but come out on top in another.
On Saturday, December 28, the Lady Tigers were on the hardwood as they took on a tough Cookeville team. DeKalb would fall behind early and never recover.
The Lady Tigers scored seven in the first period, with two-point baskets by Millie Barton and Allie Melton, a pair of free throws by Chloe VanVranken, and one free-throw point by Brooke Fuson. Cookeville dominated with 29 points.
VanVranken and Lillie Young each had a two-point basket for the Lady Tigers in the second. Cookeville added 13 to the board and commanded a 42-11 halftime lead.
DeKalb only scored three in the third period, off of a three-point basket by VanVranken. Cookeville continued on with 16 points and the 58-14 lead.
Autumn Crook hit a two-pointer and a free throw for DeKalb in the fourth, while Young and Barton each had a two-point shot. Cookeville sealed the game shut with 14 more points and the 72-21 win.
The following Monday, the Lady Tigers were back on the court, this time taking on Huntland. This game would have a better outcome.
Avery Agee sank a three-point basket for the Lady Tigers in the first period, while Melton and Barton each had a two-pointer. Huntland inched ahead with eight points.
VanVranken hit a two and three-point basket for DeKalb in the second period, while Jordyn Agee added a couple of free throws and sister Avery had one. Huntland was held to four, giving the Lady Tigers the 15-12 lead at the half.
Barton came away with three two-point shots for the Lady Tigers in the third period, while Melton added a three-point basket. VanVranken had a two-pointer and a free throw, Fuson a two-pointer, and Jordyn Agee one free throw. Huntland was held to eight, giving DeKalb the 30-20 lead.
Melton hit a three-point shot for DeKalb in the fourth, while Barton added a two-pointer and a free throw. Huntland was held to five, giving the Lady Tigers the 36-25 victory.
