Local golfers make regionals

Two members of the DeKalb County golf team will be representing their squad in the regional tournament on the heels of strong finishes in the district tourney.

Advancing to regionals were Isaac Walker and Anna Chew, the two top seeds on the DeKalb roster. For Walker, this is third trip to regionals.

Their qualifications came for their play at the 6AAA District Tournament in Cookeville at the Golden Eagle Golf Club, where both had enjoyed success already this year. Walker began his season at the Early Bird tournament by winning the whole thing while Chew finished third in the same tourney.

During District at Golden Eagle, Walker finished third with a four-under-74 He was just behind Jared Funderburk of Cookeville who shot a 69. Walker shared District Player of the Year honors with Funderburk and Hogan Herring of Cumberland County High.

Chew took second in her part of the district tourney at Golden Eagle, shooting a 73, one stroke back from winner, Makenzie Morton of White county. Chew made first team all-district. The pair was scheduled to complete Monday at Cleveland Country club in the Regional 3AAA tournament with state berths at stake.

Overall in the district tournament, the DeKalb County Boys’ team finished eighth out of nine teams with a combined score of 384. Jadyn Young shot an 89, Ethan Jenkins a 109, Chance Mabe a 112, and Justin Washer a 121.

They were 90 strokes behind Cookeville which won the district. The White County girls won their part of the tournament.
