DeKalb County Senior Citizens are celebrating a big victory, after one team came away with the Chair Volleyball Championship on Monday, September 26, at the 2022 Senior Olympics at Fair Park Senior Citizens Center in Cumberland County.

The DeKalb County team (age 60+) went undefeated and received a gold medal and the championship trophy for 2022. The DeKalb County team B, took home the bronze medal, while the Age 70+ team won gold and the overall silver medal in their age group.

“It’s excellent exercise and a lot of fun,” said Coach said Anne Huebner. “The rules are changed. We play with a beach ball with a five-foot net and you have to stay in the chair. If you stand up, and get but cheeks off of the chair, we yell, ‘Fanny Foul!’ and everyone laughs. We have a good time.”

“It’s great exercise, improves hand to eye coordination, as well as being a good stress reliever. We laugh and have a good time, but they are competitive,” said Coordinator Pam Redmon. “We have ages 60 to 95. We had a 97 year-old but they had to quit. We currently have a 90 year old and a 91 year old.”

The cost of participation was $30 a person and the seniors said they wanted to thank their sponsors for the event, NHC, FirstBank, Wilson Bank & Trust, and Janney and Associates.
