There’s no better way to get ready for the Fiddlers' Jamboree than a 5K run through historic downtown and surrounding areas. And what better way to get the blood pumping than to enter the 20th annual Fiddler 5K and One Mile Fun Run July?
The run benefits Habitat for Humanity here in DeKalb County and offers a 5K course and a one-mile fun run around downtown Smithville.
Sean Edwards of Carmel, Ind., won the 5K portion last year. He ran the course in 19:27. Fellow Carmel resident Brooklyn Edwards won the female division. She finished in 19:46. There were 295 contestants last year and the race director says there are usually around 300, with 109 already pre-registered as of late last week.
The race will be held Saturday, July 7 and begins at 7 a.m., even if it’s raining. The course will continue along the same path as last year, beginning by First Baptist Church on Church Street, going through downtown, winding to the golf course and back to downtown, ending at Love-Cantrell Funeral Home.
"We’re so excited to be celebrating this milestone,” said race director Tecia Puckett Pryor of the 20th year of the event.
"Anybody who is interested in participating either in the one-mile fun run or the 5K may go to www.fiddler5k.com where you’ll find a printable registration form that provides all the details of registration and a link to online registration. A course map is also available there. Online registration ends July 4 and any mailed registration forms must be received at the race office by July 2.
"Runners may mail registrations to our P.O. Box 750, Smithville TN 37166 or drop them off no later than Monday afternoon, July 2 at my law office at 312 West Broad Street next to Griffin’s Fruit Market," she said.
Race day registration is available but all those who pre-register are guaranteed a race shirt.
The Fiddler 5K is a qualifying race for the “Run the Cumberland Medal Series."
