Road Win for Tigers

The DeKalb County High School Tigers baseball team managed to claim a road win last week as they played a series against the Livingston Academy Wildcats.

The Tigers hosted the Wildcats on Monday, March 24, and Livingston would get on the board first, scoring one run at the top of the first inning. Ty Webb would start things off for the Tigers in the first, getting a walk, followed by a single line drive to right by Dallas Kirby. Tucker Webb would next load the bases after an HBP, and later Luke Johnson would get a walk, sending Ty Webb across the plate. The game was tied 1-1.

Right off the bat, a homer reclaimed the lead for the Wildcats at the top of the second, and they would later score one more, taking a 3-1 lead.

Livingston scored another run at the top of the third, and two more at the top of the fourth.

The Tigers would finally get moving at the bottom of the fifth after Andrew Dakas reached on a grounder and error by the shortstop, followed by a walk for Ty Webb. Kirby would also get a walk, then Tucker Webb doubled on a hard grounder to right as Dakas and Ty Webb scored. Evan Prichard would next single on a fly to short as Kirby scored, then Luke Johnson singled on a ground ball to left, sending Tucker across the plate. The Wildcats would get off the field but DeKalb had cut the lead 6-5.

The game would go through seven innings, but the Wildcats would hang on and take the 6-5 win. Evan Prichard took the loss from the mound, allowing nine hits and six runs over five innings, striking out four and walking two. Silas Kirksey came in relief, going two innings and allowing one hit, striking out one and walking one.

The following day, the Tigers were on the road, this time facing the Wildcats on their home field. This time the Tigers would dominate through most of the game.

Ty Webb started the game with a double fly to left, then Kirby got a straight up walk and Tucker Webb took an HBP. Prichard was up next and singled on a hard grounder to right as Ty Webb scored and Kirby scored on the throw. Johnson reached on a dropped third strike, then Tucker came home on a wild pitch as Kirksey was up to bat. Kirksey went down swinging, then Preston Taylor reached on a grounder and error at third as Prichard and Johnson scored.  The Tigers were up 5-0.

The second inning would be even better for DeKalb. Ty Webb singled on a line drive to center, and later Tucker Webb got a walk. Prichard next singled on a line drive to right as Ty touched the plate, then Johnson singled on a fly to center as Tucker crossed home.

Kirksey singled on a fly to left, then Taylor got a walk, sending Prichard home. Johnson scored on a wild pitch as Ben Driver was up to bat, then Driver reached on an error by third base as Kirksey scored. Dakas was up to bat and Cooper Odom, running for Taylor, scored on an error by third, then Dakas singled on a fly to center. Later, Kirby doubled on a fly to right as Dakas and Driver came home. The Tigers commanded a 13-0 lead.

Livingston got on the board with one run in the second, and five more at the bottom of the fourth.

Ty singled for the Tigers at the top of the fifth, followed by a double grounder to center by Kirby. Tucker then sacrificed on a fly to left as his brother scored, putting DeKalb up 14-6.

The Wildcats scored once more at the top of the fifth, but that was the last run they would see. The Tigers iced the cake at the top of the seventh after Ty Webb was hit by a pitch. Tucker would later walk, then Prichard singled on a hard grounder to left as Ty scored. Later, Kirksey reached on a grounder and error at second as Prichard and Webb scored. The Tigers had a 17-7 lead.

Livingston had one more at bat, but couldn’t make it happen. Johnson went 3.1 innings allowing two hits and one run, striking out five and walking three. Taylor pitched 3.2 innings, allowing two hits and six runs, striking out five and walking three.

The following Thursday, the Tigers were in Watertown where the took on their purple namesakes. Ty Webb, Kirby, Prichard, and Johnson each scored a run for DeKalb at the top of the first, but the Purple Tigers came away with seven their first at bats.

Ty would walk to start the second, followed by a line drive by Kirby and an error at third. Tucker bunted and reached on an error by the pitcher, loading the bases. Later, Johnson singled on a fly to left as Ty scored, then Taylor singled on a fly to center as Kirby and Tucker scored. The Tigers had tied the game 7-7. It would be the last runs DeKalb would see.

Watertown scored one in the second, four in the third, and one in the fifth to take the 13-7 win. Kirby went one inning allowing five hits and seven runs, striking out zero and walking two. Kirksey pitched five innings, allowing eight hits and six runs, with zero strike outs or walks.
