DeKalb Middle School continued its basketball season last week, playing a home game on Monday before going on the road later in the week.
On November 18, DMS hosted tough Upperman teams. In the girls game, the Lady Saints found points hard to come by.
Zoie Ashburn scored the one lone point for the Lady Saints in the first period, a free throw. Upperman jumped away early with 23 points.
DMS only scored one more point in the second, a free throw by Hannah Tobitt, while Upperman steamed ahead with 10 more points and the 33-2 halftime lead.
Aubree Fuson hit a two and a free throw for DeKalb in the third, while Tobitt sank a two-point basket. Upperman added six, taking a 39-7 lead.
Hailey Moore hit a two-pointer and a free throw for the Lady Saints in the fourth. Upperman nailed the game shut with 13 more points, taking the 52-10 win.
The Saints would play a more competitive game. DMS scored 14 points in the first period, with a three-pointer and three free throws by Hayden Quarles, a pair of twos and a free throw by Gavin Frazier, and a three-point basket by Auston Parker. Upperman stayed close with 12 points.
It was all Quarles for the Saints in the second, scoring three three-point shots. Upperman also scored nine, giving DeKalb the narrow 23-21 halftime lead.
While the Saints seemed to roll in the first half, they would drop off in the second. Keegan Taylor scored the only points in the third period on a three-point basket. Upperman moved ahead with 11 points and the 32-26 lead.
The Saints would only manage two more points, a two-pointer by Reed Midgett. Upperman would end the game with 13 points, taking the 45-28 win.
On Thursday, the teams were on the road, this time taking on tough teams from Prescott. The girls would fall behind early.
The Lady Saints only scored on a two-pointer by Emmaline Hendrix in the first period. Prescott dominated with 16 points.
Zoie Ashburn sank a three-pointer for the Lady Saints in the second period, while Paizlee Taylor hit a two-point shot. Prescott steamrolled with 21 more points and a 37-7 lead at halftime.
DMS scored seven in the third period, with a two and three-pointer by Ashburn, and a two-point shot by Taylynn Taylor. Prescott added 11, taking a 48-14 lead.
The Lady Saints ended the game with one more point, a free throw by Ezraya Gingerich. Prescott scored nine, taking the 57-15 win.
In the boys game, it would be a close game. DMS scored 13 points in the first period, with a two a three-point basket by Parker, three twos by Midgett, and a two by Frazier. Prescott was held to six points.
The Saints scored 12 in the second period. Skylar Herriott sank a pair of three-pointers, while Parker, Midgett, and Frazier each had a two-point shot. Prescott came roaring back, tying the game at 25 with 19 points.
Parker sank a three for the Saints in the third, while Herriott had a couple of twos and Midgett had one. Prescott inched ahead with 10 points, taking the 35-34 lead.
It would come down to the fourth period, where Parker and Taylor each hit on a three-pointer, while Midgett added a pair of two-point shots. Prescott stayed right with them, scoring 12, and taking the 47-44 win.
The following day, the teams were again on the road, this time facing off with Warren County. The girls game would be much closer than previous games.
The Lady Saints had only two points in the first period, a two-pointer by Fuson. Warren jumped out with seven points.
DMS scored eight more in the second period, with a pair of twos by Taylor, a couple of free throws by Tobitt, and a free throw each for Fuson and Hedrix. Warren gained six and held the lead at the half, 13-10.
The Lady Saints came away with 12 points in the third period, with a pair of two-point baskets by Fuson and Ashburn, and two-pointers by Taylor and Tobitt. Warren was held to 10, cutting the lead 23-22.
It came down to the fourth period. Aubrie Harden had a pair of two-pointers, Ashburn had one, and Tobitt added a free throw. Warren ended the game with 11, taking the 34-29 win.
In the Saints game, DMS would have a good night. The Saints had 11 points in the first period, with a two and three-point shot by Taylor, a couple of two-point baskets by Frazier, and a two-pointer by Parker. Warren County had eight points.
The Saints continued on in the second, scoring 11 more points. Quarles sank a couple of three-point baskets, while Parker had a two-pointer and a free throw. Frazier also had a two-point shot. Warren was held to nine, giving DMS the 22-17 lead at the half.
Midgett got on the board for the Saints in the third period, scoring on a couple of two-pointers, while Frazier had a two and three free throw points. Warren scored 10, but the Saints still held a 31-27 lead.
Taylor hit a three-pointer for DMS in the fourth, while Brantley Brooks hit a two and five free throw points. Midgett had a two-pointer and two free throws. Warren was held to eight, giving DMS the 45-35 victory.
