Scoring only two points in the second half proved to be the difference as the Lady Saints went from leading to being dealt a loss on opening night by the visiting Van Buren County squad, 31-23.
The season opener looked to be trouble for the Lady Saints early as they were unable to control the Eagles’ Layla Bouldin who scored seven points in the first quarter on the way to leading all scorers on the night with a game high 14.
Facing a 13-6 deficit going into the second stanza, the Lady Saints came alive, holding Bouldin to just one bucket in the second while going on a scoring run that saw them top their visitors 15-9 and draw to within one as they went to the locker room down 22-21. Helping in the run were Ella VanVraken who scored five of her team high nine points in the second and Cadee Griffith who had five of her seven in the second frame.
The Lady Saints took the lead their first time down court in the second half as Morgan Walker hit her only bucket of the night to make it 23-22. The basket; however, would be the last for the hosts as they were held scoreless for the rest of the game. The Lady Eagles would score four and five respectively in the third and fourth, giving them the winning margin.
Rounding out the rest of the scoring for the Lady Saints were Bri Murphy and Ally Fuller, both of who had two and Avery Agee who had one.
