The DeKalb County High School Tigerettes softball team was on fire last week, getting two shutouts on the road, and one at home, going 11-2 on the season so far. DeKalb pitchers dominated from the circle while the team’s bats lit up the games.
On Monday, March 27, the Tigerettes were on the road, traveling to Cookeville to take on the Lady Cavaliers. Kora Kilgore would shut down the Cavs from the circle, throwing a complete game.
The game didn’t get going until the top of the third inning when Zayleigh Bain took a HBP on a 2-2 count. Later, Emma Martin hit a single on a line drive to right with Bain taking third. Martin would steal second as Bryna Pelham was at the plate, then Pelham would smash a double line drive to right as Bain and Martin scored. The Tigerettes were on the board 2-0.
At the top of the fifth, Morgan Walker singled on a grounder to short, then Emma Martin singled on a ground ball to center as Walker advanced to third. Walker would then score on the throw as Martin advanced to third. It was Pelham again up to the plate and this time she hit a triple on a line drive to right field, sending Martin home. DeKalb was up 4-0.
The Tigerettes would ice the cake at the top of the sixth after Aniston Farler doubled on a line drive to left. Madison Martin would then sacrifice to the pitcher as Farler took third. Elaina Turner would then get an RBI as she grounded out to short, with Farler coming home.
Later, Bain would reach on a grounder and an error at second base, followed by a walk for Walker. Emma Martin was back at the plate and singled on a grounder to center, as Bain scored, Walker took third and Martin second. Before Cookeville could get off the field, the Tigerettes held a 7-0 lead.
And that is where the score would stay. The game would go to the bottom of the seventh inning, but DeKalb would hold on for the 7-0 shutout.
Kilgore claimed the win allowing two hits and zero runs, over seven innings, striking out 15. DeKalb claimed 10 hits in the game.
The following day the Tigerettes were back on their home field, this time hosting the Cumberland County Lady Jets. DeKalb would dominate the game and shut down Cumberland in only two innings.
Bri Murphy would lead from the circle, holding the Lady Jets to a three and out at the top of the first.
Morgan Walker would get an easy trip to first, walking on a 3-2 count. Walker would steal second on a wild pitch, then Emma Martin hit a grounder and reach on an error by first as Walker took third. DeKalb’s slugger, Bryna Pelham, then walked up to the plate and hit a triple on a grounder to center as Walker and Martin came home.
Farler would take a HBP, then Turner would get a walk. Aly Griffith would step to the plate and hit a single on a fly to center as Pelham and Farler scored. Madison Martin would then walk, again loading the bases, followed by an easy score with Bri Murphy taking a HBP.
DeKalb would get more easy points as Bain, Walker, and Emma Martin, each walked, then Pelham came up and hit a single on a fly to second base. Bain would score as Walker took third and Martin claimed second.
Farler was at the plate next and with the bases loaded, she would hit a triple on a line drive to center. DeKalb was up 14-0.
The Tigerettes began substituting, with Chloe Lawson in for Turner, Makayla Scales in for Griffith, and Gracie Randolph in for Bri Murphy. Lawson would take a HBP, then Scales singled on a pop fly to second. Madison Martin would also get hit by a pitch, followed by Randolph hitting a single on a ground ball to center as Martin came home. By the end of the inning, the Tigerettes were up 14-0.
With Gracie Randolph taking over pitching duties, DeKalb made short work of the Lady Jets, going three and out. The Tigerettes then looked to shut the game down.
Bain would walk followed by Walker taking a HBP. Kora Kilgore would be out at first on a dropped third strike, then Bain would score on a wild pitch. Pelham would pop out to short, then Sydney Polk would also take a HBP, followed by a walk for Lawson, loading the bases.
Scales would hit a single line drive to right as Polk and Walker touched home and Lawson took second. Lawson stole third and Scales took second, as Olivia Gilley was at the plate, then Lawson scored on an error by the catcher as Scales took third.
Gilley got a walk, followed by a double on a line drive to center by Randolph. Gilley and Scales both scored and that was all it took to end the game. Officials called the game with the Tigerettes claiming the 20-0 shutout.
On Wednesday, March 29, the Tigerettes were again on the road where they would claim yet another shutout, this time against their old foe the Upperman Lady Bees.
DeKalb would get on the board at the top of the first and never look back. Walker singled on a ground ball to second, and later Pelham would single on a grounder to short. Next up, Randolph hit a grounder and reached on an error by first base as Walker scored and Pelham took second. Griffith would then single on a ground ball to second as Pelham crossed the plate. The Tigerettes were up 2-0.
The Tigerettes would add two more at their next at bat. Bain singled on a pop fly to left, and later Emma Martin singled on a line drive to center as Bain took second. It was Pelham again at the plate and she grounded to fielder’s choice to second, catching Martin at second. With two outs, Randolph stepped to the plate and she singled on a line drive to left, as Bain came home. Griffith was up next and she singled on a line drive to center as Pelham scored. By the time the Lady Bees got off the field, DeKalb was up 4-0.
The game would go on to the top of the fifth, where Griffith would single on a pop fly to short. Farler would then sacrifice and reach on an error by second as Griffith took second. Both runners would advance on an error by the catcher as Madison Martin came to bat, then Martin would pop out on a foul to the catcher.
Turner would sacrifice on a fly to right, allowing Griffith to score as Farler was held at second. Bain would then triple on a line drive to right, sending Farler home. Walker singled on a line drive to center as Bain scored, then Emma Martin singled on a grounder to left as Walker scored. Pelham was next and singled on a hard grounder to center as Martin scored. The Tigerettes were up 9-0.
At the top of the sixth, it was more of the same. The Tigerettes just dominated at the plate. Farler singled on a line drive to center, followed by a sacrifice by Madison Martin and her reaching on an error by third. Turner would then double on a line drive to center sending Martin and Farler across the plate.
Later, Walker took a HBP, then Pelham singled on a line drive to center sending Turner home. DeKalb claimed the 13-0 lead. Upperman had one last chance to avoid the shutout, but pitcher Kora Kilgore shut them down. Kilgore claimed the victory, allowing three hits over six innings, striking out six for the 13-0 shutout.
On the week, the Tigerettes outscored their opponents 40-0.
