The Tigerettes took the Region 4-AA softball crown Wednesday night in Smithville, defeating the Livingston Academy Lady Blue Devils 4-1.
In another epic battle of the pitching arms between Lady Blue Devil Sidney Pennycuff and DeKalb’s Kayley Caplinger, DeKalb scored four runs on six hits against LA Wednesday, committing two errors.
The Tigerettes took the lead early when Tyra Graham made her way across the plate to give DeKalb a 1-0 lead. The score held until a fourth-inning rally, which saw DCHS score three runs with help from a home run from Graham.
Caplinger’s scoreless post-season was brought to an end in the seventh inning, when LA threatened after scoring one and loading the bases with the tough section of the Lady Devils batting up. DeKalb managed to shut down the uprising with the potential go-ahead run at the plate for Livingston.
Livingston Academy scored one run on four hits and committed one error.
Graham belted a homerun and two singles, while Myranda Bailiff, Hannah Walker, and Joni Robinson put in one single each.
The win set DeKalb up to host Red Bank High School in the first round of sub-state play. The game is set to take place at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Danny Bond Field. While the Tigerettes have faced Livingston Academy twice in post-season play, defeating the Lady Blue Devils for both the district and the region championships, it is conceivable that the matchup could occur again. LA will hit the road to face Chattanooga Christian this weekend, seeking a state tourney berth as well.
