The DeKalb County Tigerettes welcomed the arrival of spring break with a win over Macon County as they prepared to head south to take part in the Gulf Coast Classic softball tournament in Gulf Shores, Ala., this week.
The Tigerettes plated two runs in the top of the seventh to burst the bubble of their hosts, taking a hard-earned road win by a count of 5-4. The win comes in a game the DeKalb girls trailed for the most part after giving up two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Tigerettes did not get on the scoreboard until the fifth inning and still trailed going into the sixth inning by a count of 3-1. However, the sixth proved to be the breakout inning for DeKalb as the team scored two runs, knotting the score at 3-3 going into the final inning. Their two runs gave them the margin of victory in the seventh as Macon County could muster only one run in response.
Quieting the Macon bats was winning pitcher Emme Colwell while Madison Whitehead came in to relieve her and was credited with the save. Helping spur on the win were Maddison Parsley, Kenzie France, Joni Robinson and Kelly Roberts, all with double bag hits. The Tigerettes outhit their hosts 10 to eight.
Their win comes after a good start for the softball squad which kicked off the season in winning fashion, with an opening game victory over Watertown by a score of 13-6.
The Tigerettes led cover to cover, starting the season out right slugging their way to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning at Watertown. They were led in their grand opening behind stellar performances by Joni Robinson who belted two out of the park and Allison Maynard who added one round tripper in the Tigerette homerun fest.
Watertown was able to counter in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own and then put up another three runs in the home portion of the third.
However, that would be all the scoring for the home team as the Tigerettes broke through for one more in the third and four in the fourth to salt away the game. Two more runs in the fifth served as insurance.
Contributing to the final count were Robinson who had six runs batted in joined b Roberts with two RBIs. Maddison Parsley, Kenzie France, Kelly Roberts, Abbi Taylor and Kristena Bain all contributed RBIs to the total. In addition, Parsley, Robinson, Maynard and Bain all boasted doubles while France had a double double with a pair of two-baggers.
Emma Cowell registered the win for the Tigerettes, who followed up their opening day win with a 1-3 performance at the Gordonsville tournament.
They fell 10-1 against Farragut in game one, in a game that saw Emme Colwell blast a homer. They rebounded to win their second game of the tourney, topping Bremen 7-2. France, who was also the winning pitcher, homered for the Tigerettes in a game that saw the DeKalb girls out hit their opponents 11-3.
The Tigerettes failed to score in the next game of the tourney, losing 3-0 to Morristown East.
The winner was the same in the next game when they rematched with Morristown East, losing 7-3.
