The DeKalb County High School Soccer Team has been hard at work over the past few weeks, including participation in a tournament against some AAA teams. The Franklin County Rebelette Classic took place April 5-6, and included 11 varsity high schools divided into three groups. The Tigers were placed in a group that pitted them against Franklin County and Cleveland.
On the first day of the competition, the Tigers went up against Franklin in a match that would ultimately end in a 0-0 tie. DeKalb’s goalkeeper, Skylar Pease, had seven saves in the game.
The Tigers next faced Cleveland, and the team fell behind early. Cleveland scored three minutes into the 30-minute tournament game, then again seven minutes later.
Cleveland scored again only five minutes before the end of the match, then the Tigers got on the board with a goal by Eli Lomas, and an assist by Miguel Rodriguez, with two minutes to go.
Cleveland topped off their score with one minute left, taking the win, 4-1. Pease had 16 saves in the game.
The following day the Tigers took on a team from West Creek High School. The Tigers played a tough game that remained scoreless until 18 minutes into play when West Creek scored. That would be the only points of the game with DeKalb falling, 1-0. Pease had two saves in the game.
The Tigers Coaches said that DeKalb finished in second place in their group, and as a new team, the tournament provided an opportunity to be challenged by larger AAA teams. "The Tigers stepped up to the challenge and showed exceptional improvement.
On April 10, the Tigers were back to regular season games, on the road at Goodpasture. DeKalb fought hard, but would suffer a big 7-1 defeat. The only goal for the Tigers would come from Lomas, who scored 33 minutes into play. Pease had nine saves during the match.
On April 16, DeKalb was again on the road, this time to take on the Owls in Smith County. Brandon Leiser came away with a goal nine minutes into the game, while Lomas took another goal seven minutes later. The Tigers got a much-needed win, 2-1. Goalie Pease had nine saves in the game.
On April 17, the Tigers were once more on the road, this time facing Livingston Academy. It would be another hard-fought game, with Livingston striking first with a goal 27 minutes into play. However, Lomas once again came through for DeKalb, scoring a goal one minute later and tying the game. Pease had four saves in the game.
The battle raged until the second half, when Livingston scored the game winner 64 minutes into the game. DeKalb fell, 2-1. Pease had seven saves in the game.
On a brighter note, the Junior Varsity Tigers played afterwards and came away with a win. Corey Ferrell scored 17 minutes into the game, Roberto Mata at 23 minutes, and Bruno Ramirez at 38 minutes. The Tigers got a 3-1 win. Pease had three saves, while Geovani Guzman had two, and Jonathon Munoz had seven.
