The DeKalb County High School Tigers basketball team fell in the team's only home game last week, then split a pair of games on the road.
On Tuesday, January 5, the Tigers were at home as they faced off with the Pioneers of Warren County. It would not be a good night for the hometown crowd.
Elishah Ramos had a three-point basket for DeKalb in the first quarter, while Evan Jones, Aiden Curtis, and Conner Close each had a two-pointer. The Pioneers put up 20 points, giving them the 20-9 lead.
The Tigers scored nine more points in the second quarter, with Ramos getting another three-pointer, while Jones had a two-pointer and a pair of free throws. Robert Wheeler added a two-point shot. Warren added 16 points to the scoreboard, taking a 36-18 halftime lead.
Jordan Young sand a pair of three-point baskets in the third quarter, while Luke Jenkins had a two-pointer and a couple of free throws. Jones also had a two-point shot. The Pioneers had 18 points, increasing their lead, 54-30.
DeKalb outscored Warren in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late. Wheeler had a pair of two-pointers, while Zack Birmingham had a three-point basket. Jacob Hendrix had a pair of free throw points, while Jenkins had one. The Pioneers scored seven points, more than enough to secure the win. Warren came out on top, 61-40.
On Friday, January 8, the Tigers went on the road, playing a close game against border rival Cannon County. DeKalb came away with 11 points in the first quarter, with Ramos getting a pair of two-point baskets, Young a three-pointer, and Brayden Antoniak and Jones each with a two-pointer. The Lions came out ahead, with 14 points.
Antoniak had a couple of two-point shots for the Tigers in the second quarter, with Stetson Agee getting a three-pointer, and Jones a two-point shot. Cannon matched DeKalb point for point, scoring nine of their own. The Lions were up at halftime, 23-20.
The Tigers scored 12 points in the third quarter, with Jones coming away with three two-point baskets, and Ramos and Young each with a three-point shot. The Lions added to their lead with 20 points, going up 43-32.
DeKalb got hot in the fourth quarter, putting up 19 points on the scoreboard. Young had a pair of three-point baskets, while Jenkins and Agee each had one. Jones had a two-pointer and a couple of free throw points, while Ramos had a two-pointer and one free throw point. Cannon County was held to 12 points, but it would be four points too much. The Lions took the 55-51 victory.
The following day, the Tigers were back on the road, this time to Dunlap, TN, to take on Sequatchie County. DeKalb would have a much better result.
DeKalb jumped out with the early lead, scoring 15 in the first quarter. Jones had three two-point shots, while Young had a two and three-point basket. Antoniak also had a two-pointer. Sequatchie stayed right with them though, scoring 13 points.
Young came away with a pair of three-point shots in the second quarter, while Antoniak and Jones each had a two-pointer. Ramos added two free throw points. While DeKalb scored 12 points, Sequatchie matched them point for point. The Tigers held an uncomfortable halftime lead, 27-25.
The Tigers finally broke loose in the third quarter, putting 20 points on the board. Jones had three two-point shots and a pair of free throws, while Young had a couple of three-point baskets. Ramos had two two-point shots, while Antoniak had one. Sequatchie was held to eight points, giving the Tigers and 47-33 lead.
Ramos put up a couple of two-point shots for the Tigers in the fourth quarter, along with a couple of free throws. Antoniak had a two-pointer and a free throw, Agee a two-pointer, and Jenkins a couple of free throw points. Sequatchie was held to 14 points, giving DeKalb the 60-47 victory.
The Tigers are now 4-6 (1-3) on the season.
