The DeKalb County High School Tigers baseball team fell in two games early last week, but managed to finally get a win on Thursday over Macon County, with a Friday game cancelled due to weather.
On Monday, March 11, the boys were on the road, where they would take on Community. DeKalb would get on the board first, but Community would surge late and manage to inch out a one-point win.
Ty Webb would get the Tigers on the board in the first inning after a double on a fly to right. With Dallas Kirby at bat, Webb took third on a passed ball, then Kirby would single on a line drive to right as Webb scored. Kirby would later be caught stealing second.
Community would take the lead in the bottom of the second. With bases loaded, an error on a grounder to short Konner Young, gave Community the tying run. Another runner would find his way home after a grounder to fielder’s choice to third, Webb, before the inning was over.
Action wouldn’t pick back up until the top of the fourth, when Braxton Cantrell, then Nick Daw would each get a walk. As Ty Webb was at the plate, Cantrell would take third on a wild pitch, then Daw reached second on a passed ball. Webb would fly out to the pitcher, but then Andrew Dakas grounded to fielder’s choice at second as Cantrell scored. Community would get off the field but DeKalb had tied 2-2.
It wouldn’t take long for Community to get back out in front. With one out, a grounder and an error by second, Kirby, had one at first, then a single ground ball to third base, Webb, had runners at first and third. Next, a line drive to center had one runner touch home plate, then another score on the throw. A single grounder to left, then a single line drive to right would see one more runner come home. The Tigers would get off the field, but Community was up, 5-2.
DeKalb would bounce right back at their next at bat. Kirby and Brayden Carter would each get a walk, then Westin Wright would single on a line drive to left field as Kirby scored. Cantrel would then sacrifice to the pitcher as Carter took third and Wright second, then, as Webb was at bat, Carter scored on a wild pitch as Wright took third. Webb would then single on a fly to left as Wright scored. The Tigers had tied the game 5-5.
Community would not lay down, and after their first at bat hit a double line drive to center, a sacrifice would have him standing on third. Another single, on a fly to right would drive the run home before DeKalb could close out the inning.
The game would go to the seventh where the Tigers had one last chance at bat. Daw would be out at first on a dropped third strike, then Webb and Dakas would go down swinging. Community held on for the 6-5 win.
Luke Johnson allowed five hits and five runs from the mound for the Tigers over three and one-third innings, while Cam Caballero went two and two-thirds innings with one run on five hiys, striking out none and walking none.
The following day would not be kind to the Tigers as they hosted visiting Warren County. The Pioneers would jump out with the lead early and never look back.
At the top of the first, with bases loaded, and two outs, a hit by a pitch pushed one runner across the plate. The Tigers would get off the field but the Pioneers were up 1-0.
With a double play, the Tigers at bat would come to an end and Warren County would continue to add to the scoreboard. With one on second, Easton Denning knocked it out of the park for a two-run homer. The Tigers would get off the field but Warren was up 3-0.
DeKalb would finally get on the board at their next at bat. Carter reached on a hard grounder and an error by second, then Wright got a walk. The bases were loaded after Evan Prichard also walked, then Carson Donnell flew out to short. Webb would then get a walk, sending Carter across the plate. Warren would end the inning, but DeKalb was on the board, 3-1.
The Tigers would inch a little closer at the bottom of the third. Kirby would single on a fly to right, then take second while Carter was at bat. Carter would hit a hard grounder to short and reach on an error, then as Wright was at the plate, Kirby would advance to third as Carter stole second. Wright would strike out looking, but as Prichard was up to bat, Kirby would steal home on a passed ball. The Tigers had narrowed the lead, 3-2.
Unfortunately, that would be the last run DeKalb would see. The Pioneers would another in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the seventh, and claim the 9-2 win.
Evan Prichard took the loss from the mound, going three and two-thirds innings, with four runs on two hits, striking out six and walking six.
The following Thursday, the Tigers were on the road, this time facing off with the Macon County Tigers. DeKalb would get it’s first win this match.
Action didn’t start until the top of the second. With two outs on the board, Prichard would get a walk, then Cabellero would get hit by a pitch. Webb would also walk, loading the bases, then Cantrell would single on a line drive to left, sending Prichard home.
Young was up next, and he would also hit a single, on a line drive to right, sending Cabellero home. Webb would be caught out advancing to second, but DeKalb was up 2-0.
Macon would get one run at the bottom of the second, before Cabellero struck out the next two batters, and the last flying out to second.
DeKalb would add to their lead at the top of the fifth, with Cantrell singling on a fly to center, followed by a single ground ball to short by Young. Webb would then single on a hard ground ball to center, as Cantrell took third, and Young second. Wright would then ground into a double play at second, catching Webb at second and Wright at first, but allowing Cantrell to score. The Tigers were up 3-1.
The game would go to the top of the seventh when DeKalb would pretty much seal things shut. Webb singled on a line drive to left, then Wright reached on a grounder and an error at third. After Carter grounded out to first, Webb took third, and Wright second. Donnell was up next and Webb would score on a passed ball. Donnell would then single on a hard grounder to center, with Wright scoring on the throw. Macon would get off the field, but DeKalb was up 5-1.
Cabellero would end the game, striking out the first batter, with the next grounding out to second. A fly ball to Carter in center field ended the game with DeKalb victorious, 5-1.
Cabellero surrendered three hits and one run over seven innings, striking out seven and walking two.
