The DCHS Tiger football squad pulled off a miraculous 25-22 win at the buzzer against the Grundy County Yellow Jackets in Coalmont Friday Night.

While a first-quarter defensive melee saw neither team get on the scoreboard, Grundy put six up mid-way through the second period on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Hagen Cash to Kevin Castro. A successful two-point conversion put Grundy up 8-0. The score stood at halftime.

The Tigers finally got on the board with 5:32 on the clock in the third, when Bradley Miller picked off a Grundy pass and dashed 94 yards for a touchdown. DeKalb quarterback Tyler Cantrell kept the ball for a two-point conversion to tie the score at 8-8.

The Yellow Jackets regained the lead with just under eight minutes on the clock in the third with a 54-yard pass from Hagen Cash to Castro. A failed extra point attempt gave Grundy a 14-8 advantage.

The Grundy lead was stretched to 22-8 with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Cash to Evan Nunley early in the fourth. Another good two-point conversion put the Yellow Jackets ahead 22-8.

A five-yard touchdown toss from Cantrell to Matthew Poss marked the Tigers first touchdown of the game on an offensive play with less than eight minutes left in the game, along with a good RP kick by Poss, dropped the Grundy lead to 22-15.

Minutes later DeKalb tied the game with a 77-yard pass from Cantrell to Riley Sexton. Poss put another good EP up, and the score was tied at 22-22 with less than four minutes left in the game.

The DeKalb defense stopped the Yellow Jackets, and upon regaining possession of the pigskin, the Tigers drove the ball to the Grundy one-yard line with seven-tenths of a second on the clock.

DeKalb set up for a field goal, which left Poss’ foot just as the final buzzer sounded. The kick was good, and the Tigers went ahead 25-22 to win the contest and push Grundy’s record back to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in regional play.

The Tigers, now 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the region, have a bye week this Friday, but will return on Oct. 21 to host the Upperman Bees on Oct. 21, and will visit Cannon County on Oct. 28 to wrap up the regular season.

All games kick off at 7 p.m.
