Tigers Split Series Against Warriors
Baseball

The DCHS Tigers baseball team was back in action last week, splitting a two-game series against White County, then getting a win and another two losses at the Wilson County Invitational.

On March 18, the Tigers were on their homefield where they hosted the White County Warriors. DeKalb would get on the board first with three runs in the second inning. Westin Wright got a walk, then Evan Prichard singled on a line drive to right. Later, Braxton Cantrell singled on a line drive to center, sending Wright home, then Ty Webb singled on a grounder to right, as Andrew Dakas, running for Prichard, scores. Cantrell would score on the throw. DeKalb was up 3-0.

White County would score on a wild pitch at the top of the third, but the Tigers would add to their tally as they came to bat. Wright singled on a line drive to center, and would take second on a sacrifice by Prichard. Cam Caballero would reach on a dropped third strike and Wright would score. The Tigers were up, 4-1.

The Warriors would go three and out with Prichard on the mound, then again put more points on the board. Konner Young doubled on a line drive to center, and would take third after Webb grounded out at third. Dallas Kirby would then reach on a grounder and an error by short, as Young crossed the plate. Kirby would later steal home giving DeKalb a 6-1 lead.

White would score one more in the sixth, but the Tigers would ice the cake at their time at bat with a single by Young, and a single on an error by right field for Kirby as Young scored. The Warriors would have one more at bat, but Young would retire them three up three down, giving DeKalb the 7-2 win.

The following day, the Tigers were on the Warriors’ home ground. This would be a much closer game.

DeKalb put two on the board in the first inning, with a single on a fly to center by Kirby, and later a single on a fielder’s choice to third by Brayden Carter. Wright would then step to the plate and double on a ground ball to right as Kirby and Carter scored.

The Warriors would also score two at their first at bat, but the Tigers would inch ahead at the top of the second. Prichard doubled on a fly to left, and later, Cantrell reached on a grounder and error at short. Young would be out on a sacrifice fly to center, but Prichard would touch home. The Tigers inched ahead, 3-2.

White County stepped up their game at the bottom of the second, scoring four points and taking a 6-3 lead.

The Tigers would cut into the lead at the top of the third, with a run by Kirby, but would be down 6-4.

It looked as if the game might get away from the Tigers at the bottom of the fourth, with the Warriors adding two more runs, then adding another in the fifth.

DeKalb would cut that lead in the sixth with three more runs. Webb got a walk, then Cantrell singled on a line drive to left. Young would then single on a bunt, then Tucker Webb grounders to fielder’s choice at pitcher, catching Ty at home. Kirby would then get a walk, sending Young home, then Carter would sacrifice to center as Young scored. Webb would later score on a wild pitch. The Tigers cut the lead, 9-7.

At the top of the seventh, the Tigers would not only tie the game, but take a one-run lead. Carson Donnell singled on a line drive to left, then Webb took a base with a HBP. Cantrell would be out at first on a dropped third strike, but Donnell would score as Webb took third. Young then hit a single fly on an error by second, as Webb scored. Tucker Webb would then double on a line drive to left as Young scored. The Tigers were up 10-9.

It wouldn’t last long though. With two on base, a bunt and an error by Donnell resulted in a two-run score. The Warriors would take the 11-10 win.

On Thursday, the Tigers were in Wilson County to take part in the WCI Tournament. There they would get a 6-3 win over the Titusville Rockets, but on the next day, would fall to Friendship Christian 7-3, and on Saturday go down 15-0 against Wilson Central.
