It would be a tough couple of weeks for the DCHS Tigers basketball team. They would end tournament play with a loss to Stewart’s Creek before the end of the year, then fall at home in district play as DeKalb hosted White County.
On December 29, the Tigers concluded play in the AFLAC Christmas Tournament in Watertown as they faced off against Stewart’s Creek. Stewarts Creek would dominate most of the game.
The Tigers scored eight points in the first period, with Conner Close sinking a couple of two-pointers, and Seth Fuson and Alex Antoniak each with one. Stewart’s Creek would open with 13 points.
DeKalb put nine points on the board in the second, with three-pointers by Jon Hendrix and Ian Colwell, and a two-pointer and a free throw by Antoniak. Stewarts run up the scoreboard with 22 points and the 35-17 halftime lead.
Close sank three two-point baskets for the Tigers in the third period, while Hendrix and Antoniak each had a pair of two-pointers and a free throw, and Jordan Parker with one two-point shot. Stewart’s Creek continued their onslaught with 26 more points and the 61-35 lead.
The Tigers ended the game with 13 more points. Chase Young put up a two and three-point basket, Close a couple of two-pointers, and Ben Driver and Fuson each had one two-point shot. Stewart’s Creek ended with 12, and the 73-48 win.
On Friday, January 5, the Tigers were back on their home court, taking on the White County Warriors in the first district game of the season. DeKalb would start strong, but then begin to fade.
The Tigers scored 14 points to start the game, with Seth Fuson sinking a two-pointer and a couple of free throws, Alex Antoniak a three-pointer, Dallas Kirby a two-point shot, Jordan Parker and Conner Close each with a pair of free throw points, and Jon Hendrix with one free throw point. White County put eight on the board.
DeKalb was held to seven points in the second period, with Close sinking a two and three-point basket, and Kirby with a two-pointer. The Warriors came away with 16 points, taking the 24-21 lead at the half.
Hendrix and Close each had a two-point shot for the Tigers in the third, while Parker added a free throw point. White County pounded away with 23 points, going up 47-26.
Close put three two-pointers and a pair of free throws on the board for the Tigers in the fourth, while Fuson and Kirby each had a two-point shot. The Warriors ended the game with 14 points, taking the 61-38 win.
