Another DCHS top athlete will be moving on to the college level after Tiger baseball senior Ty Webb announced that he was signing to play with Maryville College. A signing ceremony was held last Friday at the DCHS auditorium where he was joined by family, friends and his teammates.
Webb is the son of Tad and Tracy Webb of Smithville, and said that Maryville seemed like the right fit.
“It’s a smaller school, close to home, and I felt like it was a good fit for me,” Webb said. “I really liked the coaches. I talked with them a lot, and they seemed like good people and they had a good atmosphere there.”
Webb said he plans on playing catcher and outfield for the Scots, but can’t decide which he enjoys more, the field or hitting.
“I’m a catcher, and I oversee the whole field. I try to help put everyone where they need to be. I enjoy hitting and don’t know what I would rather do, hit or play the field. I put a lot of time into hitting, and you get out what you put in.”
Webb said he plans to study engineering while at college, planning on designing and building bridges and other projects.
Ty’s father, also just happens to be his coach, a roll that Tadd Webb has performed most of Ty’s life in one sport or another. Tadd said he is proud to see his son moving to the college ranks.
“It’s something Ty has looked forward to for a long time and something he has worked for. He has definitely earned it and deserves it,” said Coach Webb.
Coach Webb has been coaching at the high school level at DCHS for six years, but also served as the DeKalb Middle School football coach for a time.
When asked if it easier or more difficult coaching his own son, Coach Webb he tries to hold all of his team to the same standard. “It’s tougher because of my expectations for him (Ty) and I’m a lot more critical, it’s one of those things where I have expectations but I try to hold all of my guys to that accountability and be critical on them, not just my three sons, but the rest are like my boys as well,” he explained.
As for Maryville, Coach Webb said he believes Ty has made a good choice. “We went up there on a couple of different visits. After the first visit, I didn’t tell him but I told Tracy after we left, I think this is the fit for him. Ultimately, it was his decision where he wanted to go,” said Coach Webb.
Ty has two brothers, sophomore Tucker, who is also a member of the Tiger baseball team, and younger brother Tate. Both Ty and Tucker also played on the Tigers football team.
