The DeKalb County Middle School football team hosted the Cornerstone Yellowjackets on Tuesday night at VanHooser Stadium. The game, originally scheduled to be 8th Grade Night, was now both 8th Grade Night and Homecoming for the Saints.
The air was full of excitement as the football players escorted the Homecoming Queen Morgan LeAnn Pedigo and her court onto the field.
However, the game was not as exciting, as the Saints lost by a score of 32-0.
Cornerstone did not score until there was 7:10 remaining in the first half with a 6-yard pass.
Four minutes and seven second later, the Yellowjackets scored their second touchdown when the Cornerstone halfback took a pitch, ran around the end, pulled up, and tossed the ball to an open receiver who then raced 64 yards for the score.
The 2-point conversion run was good, and with only 3:03 remaining in the first half, Cornerstone led 16-0.
The third quarter was scoreless with both teams having had possession of the football only once. The ??????? scored once more at the 3:51 mark in the fourth quarter.
After the Saints failed to convert a fourth down play, the ??????? took possession on the Saints 10-yard line.
On their first play of the drive, Cornerstone punched it in from 10 yards out, extending the lead 24-0.
After the Saints failed to move the football on their ensuing drive, the ??????? took over on downs.
On their second play, Cornerstone added yet another score with a 13-yard touchdown run. With the 2-point conversion run good, the ??????? led 32-0.
The Saints' offense could not get anything going in the final moments, as the game ended with a score of 32-0 in favor of Cornerstone.
On Thursday night, the Saints wrapped up the season with a loss to Westmoreland Eagles, 32-8 in Smithville.
The Eagles started their first drive with the football and scored on an 11-play drive that was capped off with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone by the Eagles' quarterback. The 2-point conversion was good, and with 7:56 remaining in the second quarter, the Eagles led 8-0.
The Saints' offense answered back, as they marched quickly down to the 49-yard line. On third down and five, Saints' A.J. Mooneyham found an open Trenton Nicoson for a 49-yard touchdown pass.
Joey Moon's pass to Elijah Hendrixson for the 2-point conversion was good, and so, the game was tied at 8.
The Eagles regained the lead with only 55 seconds left in the first half when the Saints botched a punt attempt. The loose football was picked up by an Eagles defender and then returned for a touchdown. At halftime, the score was 8-16, in favor of the Eagles.
The second half started with the Eagles returning the kick-off to the Saints 9-yard line. Three plays later, the Eagles expanded their lead with another touchdown.
The Eagles went on to score yet one more time and held the Saints scoreless the rest of the game.
The final score was 8-32. With the loss, the Saints finished the season with a 2-5 record.
