The sheriff’s department arrested a 23-year-old Alexandria man and charged him with aggravated arson on June 18.
Shawn Patrick Byrd, 23, allegedly set fire to his Lower Helton Road home while three other people present. Sheriff Patrick Ray said the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched after a fire was reported at the home.
Firefighters reportedly found the source of the blaze to be suspicious, and called a sheriff's department detective to the scene. An investigation led to the home’s HVAC unit, where a fire had apparently been started with a table cloth and a piece of wood.
Byrd allegedly admitted to the detective that he had started the fire.
His bond was set at $25,000, and he will appear in court on June 26.
Meanwhile, Marty Tallent, 47, was arrested on June 19 and charged with public intoxication public indecency.
According to the warrants, Tallent was arrested after a deputy responded to a location on Sparta highway to look into reports of someone beating on doors. The officer allegedly found Tallent standing completely naked in the middle of the highway.
Ray said Tallent threw a beer bottle at the patrol car as the deputy approached.
He reportedly tried to leave on foot, and had to be forcibly taken to the ground and restrained. His bond was set at $3,000, and he will appear in court on July 10.
