Michael Brandon Colwell, 33, of Smithville was arrested on Tuesday, Jan. 2, for DUI second offense, evading arrest, and cited for speeding and driving on revoked.
According to Smithville Chief of Police Mark Collins, an officer observed Colwell traveling 53 mph in a 30 mph zone. The officer caught up with Colwell and initiated his lights and siren. The vehicle Colwell was driving increased in speed to evade the officer. After a brief attempt to stop the vehicle, Colwell lost control and wrecked at the intersection of Dearman and Bright Hill Rd.
The officer initiated a felony stop at that point and arrested Colwell without incident. Upon speaking with Colwell the officer noticed he had slurred speech and appeared to be unsteady on his feet. A computer check revealed that Colwell’s license was revoked in DeKalb County for a prior DUI on Aug. 7, 2008. Colwell was transported to the police department where the officer obtained a search warrant for his blood. Bond: $8000 GS: Thursday, Jan. 25.
