The county commission is making plans to appoint a new school board member to fill the seat vacated by the recent departure of Billy Miller.
A public notice has been published seeking names of those interested in filling the position. The notice states that the commission will convene for its regular monthly meeting on Oct. 27 at 6:30 p.m., and will discuss the appointment of a replacement school board member.
Before any vote is taken, the chair will allow voters of the county the opportunity to submit names to the legislative body for consideration. The names may be submitted in writing to the chair prior to the meeting, or submitted in person at the meeting. In order for a name to be considered, a member of the county legislative body must subsequently nominate the person.
Members of the commission may also nominate a candidate or candidates to fill the office or vacancy without the name being submitted by a voter. Nominations do not require a second.
If the person nominated is not present at the meeting, the person making the nomination shall submit a signed statement from the nominee that the nominee is willing to serve in the office if appointed. The appointee will serve until a successor is elected by the county voters at the next general election in August 2016.
