American Legion meeting Sept. 20


The American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary will meet Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. at the building at Snow Hill. There will be a meal before the meeting with chicken tenders. Members attending should bring a vegetable or desert. Special guests are students who went to Girls and Boys State and their families.

Free Will Baptist revival through Sept. 21


Revival will be held Sept. 16-21 at Smithville Free Will Baptist Church at 500 Bright Hill Road at 7 p.m. nightly with Chris Rumfelt, Sunday through Tuesday, and Rudy Oakes, Wednesday through Friday. Special singing each night.

Health Fair at the Complex Sept. 21


DeKalb County Health Fair will be held Sept. 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the DeKalb County Complex. From 5 to 6 p.m. visit the booths and listen to Johnny Cash’s oldest grandson Thomas Gabriel sing while from 6 to 7 p.m. Suzanne Angel will provide the community’s second Narcan (lifesaving) training. Everyone is welcome.

Judkins family reunion Sept. 23


The Than Judkins family reunion will be held Sunday, Sept. 23 at Keltonburg Community Center. Door opens at noon and lunch at 1 p.m.

Reeder reunion Sept. 29


The Reeder reunion for the relatives of Julius and Vinnie Mae Reeder will be held Sept. 29 beginning at 10 a.m. at Green Brook Park. Bring a covered dish for noon lunch along with family photos.

The Alexandria and Justin Potter Library’s Book Sale will start on Friday, Aug. 31 and will continue through Saturday, Sept. 29.


There will be books, audio books, videos and magazines for sale at great prices. The libraries are accepting donations of books and movies that are in good condition for their book sale.  We request no textbooks, magazines or encyclopedias, please.

Prayer on the Square will be held Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. in downtown Smithville.

Craft show at Midway CIC Oct. 6

Paislee’s Foundation 5th annual craft and home show Oct. 13


Paislee’s Foundation 5th annual craft and home show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 13 inside the Kenneth Sandlin Building at the DeKalb County Fairgrounds in Alexandria. Admission is free. Handbags for Hope Oct. 27


The fourth annual Handbags for Hope will be held Oct. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at Duck Pond Manor at 630 Duck Pond Road in Sparta. There will be a grab bag, purse auction and brunch. All proceeds go to domestic abuse prevention and awareness. Tickets are $30 apiece and are available through Everbrite.com (Genesis House).

Local Help Center Needs Help From the Community


His Love Help Center has been providing free clothes, shoes, medical items and etc. for over three years to people in our community. They serve all walks of life, such as single parents, the elderly, fire victims, and more. At the current location (1100 S. College St.) the Help Center has to pay rent, phone, water, gas and electric.  In order to stay open and to continue serving our community it needs your help. If you feel you are able to provide financial help, have a building they can use or a one-time donation please stop by the help center or call 615-597-(love) 5683.

The DeKalb Animal Coalition will suspended its meetings for the summer but will pick back up the first Thursday in September at 6:30 p.m. in the second story of city hall.

Smithville Head Start Center


L.B.J. & C. Head Start is currently accepting applications to provide free comprehensive child development services to children three- five years of age from low-income families in a full-day program.
Services are also offered to meet the special needs of children with disabilities. L.B.J. & C. Head Start helps all children succeed. L.B.J. & C.
