Jamboree kicks off with a bang

Pam Muller took a Tennessee State flag home to Eugene, Oregon.

The 46th annual Smithville Fiddler's Jamboree and Crafts Festival opened with a bang Friday when 91-year-old Lloyd Tisdale kicked of the festival with his clogging skills.

On Friday afternoon, State Representatives Terri Lynn Weaver and Mark Pody, along with state Senator Mae Beavers, presented flags flown over the state capitol to the two Jamboree visitors who had come from the farthest distance away, one from inside the U.S., and one from outside. Pam Muller took a Tennessee State flag home to Eugene, Oregon, and Oren Kagan of Mount Juliet, who was born in Israel, received a United States flag.

The Smithville Community Chorus performed a patriotic-themed show for the crowd, and Jamboree Coordinator Sam Stout, in his first year at the helm of the event, presented former Coordinator Jack Barton a plaque recognizing his nine years of service to the festival.

Meanwhile, preliminary competitions in sixteen categories of traditional music and dance were held Friday. The top three acts in each category returned for the finals Friday night.
