A Smithville man was injured after his 2003 Ford Explorer left the roadway on New Home Road and overturned Saturday.

According to Trooper Bobby Johnson of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Joshua Isaac Melton, 35, was traveling east when his vehicle left the road on the right side and hit a ditch and a fence before overturning and coming to rest on its top.

Members of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department’s extrication and rescue team helped free Melton, who was trapped in the vehicle. He was taken by DeKalb EMS to Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital. The DeKalb County Sheriff's Department was also on the scene.

Melton was later airlifted to Vanderbilt Medical Center.
