The Wilson County Grand Jury has indicted 38-year-old Alan Mooney Jr. in connection with the death of his father, Alan Mooney, Sr., 62.

Mooney, Sr.'s body was found in his burned home on Armstrong Road in Statesville on August 29. Mooney Jr. faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated arson, two counts of arson, and abuse of a corpse.

Mooney Jr. was living at a home on Old Snow Hill Road in DeKalb County at the time of his arrest.

The father's remains weren’t officially identified for several days after the fire because the body was reportedly burned beyond recognition. The fire at Mooney Sr.'s Wilson County home claimed the residence and two outbuildings.

Mooney Jr. was arrested in Rutherford County after a police pursuit on Aug. 30, and was transported to Wilson County to be arraigned on the murder and arson charges.

Officers employed spike strips to stop Mooney Jr.'s vehicle in Rutherford County, and he crashed at a Murfreesboro intersection. No serious injuries were reported in the pursuit.

He faces charges of evading arrest, resisting arrest and aggravated assault in connection with the Rutherford chase.

While his bond on the Rutherford County charges was set at $90,000, he is being held without bond on the Wilson County charges, and was arraigned on Sept. 6 in Wilson County. He pled not-guilty, and his next court date in Wilson County was set for Nov. 20.

He is being represented by the Wilson County District Public Defender's office.
