While Ferrell was the lone occupant of her vehicle, Castillejos' was accompanied by her three daughters, ages nine, six, and three months. The crash caused Ferrell's vehicle to leave its wheels and come to rest on its side in the ditchline, trapping her in the Chevy. Members of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene, extricating Ferrell from the wreck. DeKalb EMS transported Ferrell to a landing zone near the scene, where she was picked up by a helicopter ambulance and taken to Vanderbilt.
