A man has been arrested on carjacking charges after he allegedly boosted a vehicle at a Smithville gas station earlier this year and then led officers on a high speed pursuit in the stolen truck.

The suspect, Jonathan Dustin Payne, AKA Foust, was arrested Jan. 29 in White County for theft of property over $2,500.00, burglary, and attempted carjacking, according to Smithville Police reports.

According to the warrants, Payne got into a black 2000 Toyota truck belonging to the victim which was parked at a gas pump at Kwik-N-Ezy Market. He did so without the owner’s consent and with the intent to commit a felony theft, police believe.

“The vehicle was then stolen and later recovered in White County after law enforcement involved pursuit,” the police report reads, noting Payne then tried to jack another vehicle. “A few minutes earlier, Payne did intentionally or knowingly attempt the taking of a motor vehicle from the possession of the victim by use of force or intimidation in Arby’s parking lot.  His bond has been set at $20,000.
