Sheriff warns of holiday crime
pr
RAY

Sheriff Patrick Ray would like DeKalb Countians to be aware that the holiday season unfortunately brings an upturn in criminal activity, and urges local citizens to be alert.

“Over the last few weeks we have seen an increase in vehicle burglary reports,” Ray said. “Thieves have made entry into locked and unlocked vehicles and stolen items. This has happened on Highway 56 North and 70 West. The thieves have stolen items such as GPS systems, money, wallets, Christmas presents, sunglasses and other items.”

The sheriff also asks that any suspicious activity be reported.

“We’re asking that if the public sees any suspicious vehicles in your neighborhood, such as vehicles driving by very slowly, or passing by multiple times, or if you see strangers who appear to be suspicious walking in your area, please call the dispatch line at 215-3000. We will get a deputy out and they can take a look and make sure everything is okay,” Ray shared

He adds that extra patrols are available if you feel that your neighborhood is susceptible to criminal activity.

“We have extra patrols set up,” the sheriff said. “If you would like to be put on that list call 215-3000, and they will get you set up for extra patrols. We have deputies stationed around the county, so we can get someone to your location quickly.

“We ask that you keep your cars locked, and take any valuables, especially Christmas gifts, into the house or lock them in the trunk. Do not keep valuables in the glove compartment. When a thief breaks into a vehicle that is usually the first place he looks. If you have a GPS take it off the windshield along with the mount, and hide it or take it inside with you. Again, if you see something suspicious call us. Christmas is a time that we have a lot of thefts and break-ins, because thieves know that many new items are being purchased, so everyone should be alert. I can always be reached here at the sheriff’s department, 597-4935, if anyone has information on a crime, or we have a tip line, 464-6400. Those lines are for any type of crime, including burglary, theft, or drug-related crimes,” Ray concluded.
