A local woman was taken to DeKalb Community Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after her 1995 Ford Focus was involved in a rollover accident Sunday afternoon on Allen’s Ferry Road.
According to Smithville Police Captain Steven Leffew, Mary Harris, 64, was traveling east near Elizabeth Chapel Baptist Church when she left the roadway, struck a culvert, knocked down a speed limit sign, and overturned in the ditch.
Harris reportedly told officers that she dropped her cigarettes in the vehicle and lost control after taking her eyes of the road to search for them.
Harris had to be extricated from the car, which came to rest on its side in front of Mt. Holly Cemetery, by members of the Smithville Volunteer Fire Department.
Leffew said Harris was issued a citation for violation of the financial responsibility law (no insurance).
City officers said the accident was the second to occur in nearly the same spot last weekend.
Officer Matt Farmer said 30-year-old Russell Johnson was driving east on the same stretch of highway in a Ford Ranger pickup Saturday afternoon when he lost control and left the road on the right side, overturned.
The truck came to rest on its top near the the same spot Harris vehicle stopped.
Johnson was also taken to DeKalb Community Hospital by DeKalb EMS.
